0 selectedHow to use HatPull
HatPull is a free random name picker for drawing a name or choosing a random winner from a list. Build your list, choose how the drawing should behave, and pull a name from the hat online.
Type them individually, paste a list, or import a TXT or CSV file.
Choose whether selected names are removed from future draws and whether duplicate names are allowed.
Click “Pull a Name.” The display rapidly cycles through names before revealing the selected entry.
Draw again for another selection, or reset the drawing to return removed names to the hat.
Simple lists
Paste one name per line, or import a plain text file containing a list of names.
Smart CSV import
The tool examines headers and data to find likely name columns. If more than one column looks possible, you can choose the correct column before importing.
No account needed
The drawing runs directly in the browser and does not require a sign-in.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about HatPull, random name selection, drawing names online, and choosing a winner from a list.
Can I use HatPull as a random winner picker?
Yes. HatPull can choose a random winner from any list you enter, paste, or import. It works well for ordinary giveaways, classroom activities, team selections, games, and other casual drawings.
Is HatPull the same idea as drawing a name from a hat?
Yes. HatPull recreates the familiar “pick a name from a hat” idea in the browser. The suspense animation is visual only; the selected winner is chosen by the random selection logic before the reveal.
How are names selected?
The tool uses the browser's cryptographic random number generator when available to select an index from the current list of eligible names.
Can a winner be selected more than once?
Yes, if “Remove selected name after draw” is turned off. If it is turned on, the selected entry is removed from the active drawing until you reset it.
What happens if my list contains duplicate names?
Duplicates are ignored by default. Turn on “Allow duplicate names” if repeated entries are intentional.
What kinds of CSV files work?
The importer supports common comma, semicolon, tab, and pipe-delimited files. It looks for headers such as Name, Full Name, Participant, Employee, Student, Contact, First Name, and similar fields.
Does the CSV have to contain only names?
No. A file can contain other columns such as email, department, ID, or phone. The tool will try to identify the name column and lets you choose a different column when necessary.
Are my names uploaded?
No server upload is required by the name picker itself. The file is read locally by your browser and the drawing happens on the device.
Privacy & legal information
The name-picker function is designed to operate locally in your browser. It does not require an account or server-side list storage.
Privacy
Names entered into the tool and supported files selected for import are processed in the browser for the purpose of building the drawing list. The tool itself does not need to transmit the imported list to a server.
